As featured on Forbes.com by Roberto Bonzio

As a speaker at the recent i7 Summit in Chantilly, Paris, Talent Age CEO Kyung H. Yoon focused on how the world of technology and globalization is impacting business and how it is more important than ever to recruit innovative talents who can cope with a rapidly changing environment.

“The most effective leaders in this kind of world where everything is changing, and nothing can be taken as granted, are people who can handle rapid change and big shifts,” Yoon said. This requires intelligence, creativity, the ability to figure things out, team creation and management, and the capability to face new challenges. Yoon calls these people “T Shaped People” because they have very broad and disparate backgrounds.

As companies throughout the corporate landscape scramble to reinvent themselves to avoid becoming obsolete, the demand for multicultural, multitasking talent is increasing. This is true not just in top multinational corporations, Yoon said, but for mid-cap and startup companies across a broad spectrum of industries, nonprofit entities, educational institutions, foundations, associations and governmental entities.

Yoon urges the educational system to support this very dynamic environment by teaching people to think creatively so they can tackle problems never seen before and to train multilingual and multicultural people. In addition, lifelong learning must become a habit, Yoon said. Today’s businesses need managers who are able to change, and learning and innovating should be part of a whole career.

Massive capital reserves, a relatively robust financial sector, and effective stimulus programs helped China survive the global recession relatively unscathed and economic growth is projected to return to double-digit levels for 2010. Yet considerable challenges remain. Despite a range of new government policies and reports of progress, one of the most vexing issues remains the protection of intellectual property. In surveys this year, both the American and European Chambers of Commerce in China found that large majorities of their members continue to see IP protection as a serious challenge. The Information Technology sector, IP-intensive and targeted for rapid growth by the Chinese government, is especially vulnerable.

It is not only foreign firms that are concerned; the vast majority of IP violation claims filed in China are made by Chinese firms, and there is a growing domestic constituency for strong, transparent, and consistent IP protection.

This conference will both survey the rapidly evolving state of IP protection in China and address practical steps and strategies that firms can take to protect IP and to address cases of IP infringement. Achieving the right mix of legal, operational, and strategic considerations is difficult, but the conference’s legal and business experts from both China and the U.S. will show how it can be done.

Kyung H. Yoon, CEO, Talent Age Associates was quoted in the Wall Street Journal today on Married Executives Juggle Executive Moves by Joann S. Lublin.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2010, 4:08 P.M. ETMarried Executives Juggle International MovesBy JOANN S. LUBLINDavid W. Drysdale and his wife Mary M. Uppgren recently moved to South Korea. It represents their third foreign assignment in two years. Each time, both executives kept working for Accenture PLC, a big management consultancy. Mr. Drysdale currently manages human resources for its Korean unit while Ms. Uppgren is a global employee-communications official.Their initial move to the Philippines from Minneapolis required weeks of delicate talks, however. Mr. Drysdale says he wouldn’t take an HR post in Manila unless Accenture could “make a meaningful management role for Mary happen.”Ms. Uppgren landed such a role, and began reporting to a New York-based boss. But “it’s never easy when a key team member is multiple time zones away,” remarks Olivier Roux, her supervisor.David W. Drysdale and his wife Mary M. Uppgren recently moved to South Korea. It represents their third foreign assignment in two years.More executive couples now confront the same conundrum: staying married and employed in upper management after one spouse wins a foreign transfer. The best coping strategy for high-powered duos? Creative planning and outreach.Booming overseas markets, the proliferation of female executives and a rebound in expatriate gigs are stoking the trend.

Nearly half of 391 companies anticipate offering more international stints during the next 18 months, concluded a June poll by the Institute for Corporate Productivity.”We have seen an increase in executive-level couples accepting assignments to move overseas during the past two years” as they seek to enhance their leadership capabilities, says Susan R. Ginsberg, a vice president of Ricklin-Echikson Associates Inc. a global HR consulting firm. “The most difficult thing is accommodating the accompanying spouse.”As a result, nearly 35% of U.S. concerns offer formal career help for spouses or partners of executives sent abroad – up from 10% a decade ago, Ms. Ginbsburg estimates. REA, based in Milburn, N.J., provides this coaching in 49 countries.

“Ask for the services up front,” she recommends. “Make that a deal breaker.”Certain companies enrich an executive’s compensation if the spouse takes a lower-paid job in the foreign locale. “A new hire at a high level may have more leverage to get that kind of sweeter deal,” suggests Betsy Burlingame, president of Expat Exchange, an online community.Informal job-hunting aid by employers is more common – such as arranging local introductions for an expatriate’s mate. Tupperware Brands Corp. officials “help facilitate work permits for the accompanying partner,” says Chief Executive E.V.”Rick” Goings.

The maker and direct seller of household goods derives 85% of its revenue from outside the U.S.Executive couples headed overseas also “have to take a lot of initiative,” advises Linda Stroh, co-author of a 2005 book about international assignments. That’s what Huoy-Ming Yeh did. Born in Taiwan, she was a general partner at a venture capital firm in Menlo Park, Calif., when Cisco Systems Inc. promoted her husband Sherman Chu to general counsel of its China unit. The couple moved to Shanghai in December 2008.Ms. Yeh stayed on the venture-capital firm’s payroll for a few months before “we decided it wouldn’t work” for the firm to set up an office in China, she remembers. She obtained job interviews at several Shanghai venture-capital firms through her husband’s connections. She also tapped her extensive U.S. network, which included SVB Financial Group, the Santa Clara., Calif., parent of Silicon Valley Bank.In November 2009, Ms. Yeh joined its SVB Capital unit as a managing director. “The fact they knew me from California gave them comfort,” she believes. “And speaking fluent Chinese meant I was able to do business in Shanghai.” She handles China investments for the unit.Recruiters operating overseas can open doors for executive spouses as well.

“I try to be as helpful as I can,” says Kyung Yoon, CEO of Talent Age Associates LLC, a Palo Alto, Calif., concern that specializes in cross-border hunts. But many recruiters ignore such requests “unless there is some kind of professional relationship,” she cautions. So, if a new employer hires you to work overseas, “feel free to ask the recruiter involved for assistance with the accompanying spouse or partner,” says John Wood, a vice chairman of search firm Heidrick & Struggles International Inc.Alternative living arrangements sometimes make more sense. Tupperware now has about six international commuter marriages involving executives, compared with none a decade ago, according to Mr. Goings.A Swiss executive transferred to Singapore three years ago left his wife behind in Geneva, where she runs art studios, Mr. Goings says, adding that Tupperware offers such couples liberal travel allowances.Since the late 1980s, Diane McGreal twice relinquished her U.S. retail-buyer career to live abroad with her husband, an oil-industry executive. He later joined a global pharmaceutical maker, which offered a Puerto Rico assignment in 2003. This time, Ms. McGreal refused to move from America – because she was moving up at Berlitz International Inc.During her husband’s two-year Puerto Rico commute, she advanced to the executive ranks as head of Berlitz’s cultural consulting unit. It’s equally important that expatriate executive duos plan early for repatriation. Ms. Yeh says she has yet to broach repatriation with SVB. But she worries how she and her husband can “manage the timing of repatriation so we both are synched up with good jobs back in the U.S.”
